I have no problems scavenging for crafting materials. What I do is buy 2 of the military first aid kits. Put weapon in bank and use sprint. Now if I'm chopping trees I put my axe in secondary weapon slot and keep a trash weapon in first slot. Reasons for doing this is I'll unequip weapon in first slot which leaves you still empty handed so sprint will still work(NOT SURE IF THIS IS A BUG OR NOT). That way if you die you keep your axe which in my case would be my fireaxe. Sprint comes in handy for scavenging for materials. For the key reasons easy to get away from enemy monsters. Also easy to move faster to scavenge faster. I'm sure most people would agree with nearly everything I've said.

not sure, but last time i tried this (1 week ago) sprint skill wasnt working by doing this
